STUNT tractors, scarecrows, Suffolk Punch horses and a duck-herding sheepdog helped draw thousands of visitors to this year’s Lavenham carnival.
Following the themes of Food and Farming and Buy Local, the village recreation ground was filled with new attractions.
Carnival committee chairman Carroll Reeve said: “The highlight for me was having the animals.
“We had the Suffolk Trinity of Suffolk Punch horses, Red Poll cattle and Suffolk sheep, as well as poultry.
“There was a constant queue for the donkey rides and you could see that the kids loved being able to get close to the animals.”
Another new addition was the food tent, where visitors could sample local wares.
The Flying Fergies tractor display team kept the crowds entertained with their formation driving and daring stunts in vintage tractors,
performed, they proudly declared, at speeds of up to 10mph.
Also performing through the day were birds of prey, a poultry-herding sheepdog, and a pipe and drum band.
The rare breeds motor show provided nostalgia for many, as well the chance to drool over a selection of supercars, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis and AC Cobras.
The traditional procession saw fancy dress scarecrows and tractors make their way through the village,
although the number of tractors taking part was affected by this year’s late harvest. Winners of best-dressed group of scarecrows was Lavenham Pre-School.
Takings are still being added up but the committee believe around £12,000 has been raised, which will be spent on the village hall and the recreation grounds. Catherine McMillan
